Hormones

DHEA-S

Unit: μg/dLID: H005

What This Test Measures

Adrenal androgen precursor; resilience and vitality

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
102-416 (men), 57-279 (women), varies by age μg/dL
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
300-416 (men), 150-279 (women) μg/dL
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

DHEA-S declines with age and chronic stress, so compare it with your age range. Gabriel's optimal band: 300-416 for men, 150-279 for women, aiming for the upper half of your age range when older. Trials of DHEA supplements in older adults did not improve body composition, performance or quality of life (NEJM, 2006), and DHEA can cause acne and unwanted hair growth in women, so it isn't a way to chase a number. High in women = PCOS or adrenal tumor.

When This Test Is High

Adrenal tumor, PCOS

When This Test Is Low

Adrenal fatigue, aging, chronic stress

Related Conditions

Adrenal dysfunction, low vitality, immune suppression

Recommended Follow-Up

If low, address stress and sleep; DHEA supplements are a clinician's decision; if high (women), rule out PCOS
