Hormones

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

Unit: mIU/mLID: H010

What This Test Measures

Pituitary hormone; stimulates sperm/egg production

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
1.5-12.4 (men), varies by cycle (women) mIU/mL
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
3-8 (men), low follicular (women) mIU/mL
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

FSH stimulates sperm (men) and egg development (women). High FSH in women >40 = approaching menopause. High FSH + low T in men = testicular failure (primary hypogonadism). FSH:LH ratio helps diagnose reproductive issues.

When This Test Is High

Menopause (high in women), primary hypogonadism (high with low T)

When This Test Is Low

Low pituitary function, hypothalamic suppression

Related Conditions

Infertility, menopause, hypogonadism

Recommended Follow-Up

Check LH, testosterone, estradiol; assess reproductive function
