Iron Saturation

Unit: %ID: N011

What This Test Measures

Percentage of transferrin saturated with iron; calculated (iron/TIBC × 100)

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
20-50% %
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
24-35% %
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

Iron saturation <20% = iron deficiency. >45% = possible hemochromatosis (genetic iron overload). Gabriel's optimal band is 24-35%. This is the most sensitive early marker for hemochromatosis (before ferritin rises high). Check fasting.

When This Test Is High

Iron overload, hemochromatosis (>50%)

When This Test Is Low

Iron deficiency (<20%)

Related Conditions

Hemochromatosis, iron deficiency anemia

Recommended Follow-Up

If >45%, screen for hemochromatosis (genetic test, ferritin); if <20%, find the cause of low iron with a clinician before taking iron
