Omega-3 Index
What This Test Measures
Percentage of RBC membranes composed of EPA+DHA
Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range
The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.
Gabriel's Take
An Omega-3 Index <8% is linked to higher cardiovascular and sudden cardiac death risk. Gabriel's optimal band is 8-11%. Most Americans are 4-6%. Fatty fish (2-3 servings a week) or fish oil raise it, but don't push past about 11% with high doses: omega-3 supplements are linked to more atrial fibrillation, especially above 1 g a day (Circulation, 2021). This is one of the BEST longevity biomarkers.
When This Test Is High
Rare
When This Test Is Low
Increased cardiovascular disease, inflammation, cognitive decline
Related Conditions
Cardiovascular disease, depression, cognitive decline
Recommended Follow-Up
If <8%, eat fatty fish 2-3 times a week and recheck in 3-4 months; ask a clinician before high-dose fish oil, which is linked to atrial fibrillation
