Gabriel's Approach
Gabriel explains heavy metal testing and results in plain words, starting with the test that fits your exposure: a blood lead level for lead, and a 24-hour urine or whole-blood test for mercury. Provoked urine testing, where a chelating drug is taken first, is not validated: the American College of Medical Toxicology says it has no demonstrated benefit and may be harmful. The approach, tiered by evidence: 1) Find and remove the source (strongest evidence, always first: old paint and dust, water, work, hobbies, fish, supplements, imported spices or remedies), 2) Confirm with a validated test, 3) Prescription chelation (such as DMSA by mouth, or CaNa2EDTA by IV for severe lead poisoning) only for confirmed, significant poisoning and only under a licensed clinician, usually a medical toxicologist, with labs before, during and after; it can lower blood calcium and harm the kidneys, the FDA warns chelation can cause dehydration, kidney failure and death, and no over-the-counter chelation product is FDA-approved, 4) Nutrition (enough calcium, iron, protein and fiber; CDC asks clinicians to review calcium and iron in children with raised lead), 5) Binders many integrative practitioners use, such as chlorella or modified citrus pectin (weak human evidence; choose third-party tested products, since some carry metals), 6) Support the liver, kidneys and bowel with food, fluids, movement and sleep. Amalgam fillings: the FDA does not recommend removing fillings in good condition unless medically necessary.
Root Causes
Why Conventional Fails
Find and remove the exposure source, confirm with a validated test (venous blood lead for lead), supportive care, and prescription chelation for significant poisoning with a clinician experienced in it (DMSA by mouth is FDA-approved for children with blood lead above 45 micrograms per deciliter; CaNa2EDTA by IV for severe lead poisoning).
Low-level exposure is easy to miss: a careful work, home and diet history is the most important tool (a 2010 JABFM research letter), yet symptoms like fatigue, brain fog and neuropathy have many causes, so metals can be missed or wrongly blamed. Care can stop at treating high levels, with less attention to nutrition (calcium, iron, protein, fiber), every ongoing source, and how genetics may affect detoxification (MTHFR, GST variants, still being studied). The opposite risk is real too: provoked urine and hair tests are not validated and can lead people into chelation they don't need, and CDC reported three deaths from low blood calcium during chelation from 2003 to 2005, including a child with autism. Amalgam: the FDA found no conclusive evidence of harm in the general population, recommends against removing intact fillings unless medically necessary, and advises high-risk groups to avoid new amalgam when possible.

Your Protocol for Heavy Metal Toxicity
Choose the level that's right for your healing journey
Essential Protocol
What's Included
- Chelating agents, only for confirmed metal poisoning and under a toxicologist: prescription DMSA (succimer) or CaNa2EDTA by IV (never disodium EDTA), dosed and monitored by that clinician; Alpha-Lipoic Acid 600mg 2x/day; Binders (weak human evidence; choose third-party tested products, since some algae supplements carry arsenic): Chlorella 3-5g/day, Modified Citrus Pectin 5-15g/day, Activated Charcoal 1-2g, Zeolite clinoptilolite, Bentonite clay, Cilantro extract; Antioxidants: Glutathione 500mg liposomal or IV, NAC 1200mg 2x/day, Vitamin C 500-1,000 mg/day (up to 2,000 mg), Selenium 100-200 mcg/day (test first), Vitamin E from food, or mixed tocopherols up to 200 IU/day (not with blood thinners); Minerals to replace: Zinc 15-30 mg/day with food (test zinc and copper if used longer than 8 weeks), Magnesium (glycinate or citrate) 200-350 mg/day from supplements, Calcium 1000mg
- Chlorella: Nutrient-dense algae; not a treatment for metal poisoning, so see a doctor for blood or urine testing
- Cilantro (Yan Sui): Culinary herb; not a proven way to remove metals, so see a doctor for blood or urine testing

Dietary Guidance
Organic whole foods diet, enough calcium and iron (CDC asks clinicians to review both in children with raised lead), high-sulfur foods (eggs, garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables), cilantro and parsley (culinary herbs; not a proven way to remove metals), increase fiber (regular bowel movements), high-antioxidant foods (berries, colorful vegetables), choose lower-mercury fish (limit tuna, swordfish, king mackerel, shark), drink filtered water (reverse osmosis), avoid aluminum cookware and cans, organic, support methylation (leafy greens, B vitamins).
Lifestyle Factors
Sauna (used in many integrative protocols; evidence that it removes stored metals is limited), adequate hydration, regular bowel movements (fiber, magnesium), support lymphatic drainage (dry brushing, rebounding, massage), regular exercise, wet-clean dust and wash hands before eating in older homes, amalgam fillings: the FDA does not recommend removing fillings in good condition unless medically necessary (removal briefly raises mercury vapor and costs healthy tooth), and in 2020 it advised high-risk groups (pregnancy, nursing, young children, kidney or neurological disease, mercury allergy) to avoid new amalgam when possible, filter drinking water (reverse osmosis), avoid aluminum (cookware, antiperspirants, antacids), quit smoking (cadmium), castor oil packs (liver support), adequate sleep.
