Comprehensive Panels

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

Unit: mg/dL, mEq/LID: MET001

What This Test Measures

Glucose, kidney function (BUN, creatinine), electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, CO2), calcium

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
Glucose 70-99, BUN 7-20, Creat 0.6-1.2, Na 136-145, K 3.5-5.0, Cl 98-107, CO2 23-29, Calcium 8.5-10.5 mg/dL, mEq/L
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
Glucose 75-85, BUN 10-15, Creat 0.8-1.1 (men), 0.6-0.9 (women), Na 138-142, K 4.0-4.5, Cl 103-107, CO2 25-30, Calcium 8.9-9.5 mg/dL, mEq/L
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

CMP is a metabolic snapshot. Gabriel interprets functionally: glucose 75-85 (not 70-99), electrolytes mid-range (Na 138-142, K 4.0-4.5, not extremes). Calcium 8.9-9.5 optimal (adjusted for albumin). Low calcium + high PTH = vitamin D deficiency. High calcium = hyperparathyroidism or malignancy. Tight electrolyte control = better health.

When This Test Is High

Varies by marker: high glucose (diabetes), high BUN/creat (kidney disease), electrolyte imbalances

When This Test Is Low

Varies: low glucose (hypoglycemia), low calcium (hypoparathyroidism), etc.

Related Conditions

Diabetes, kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, parathyroid disorders

Recommended Follow-Up

Interpret comprehensively; functional ranges tighter than conventional
