Kidney

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)

Unit: mL/min/1.73m²ID: M020

What This Test Measures

Kidney filtration rate; calculated from creatinine

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
>60 mL/min/1.73m²
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
90-160 mL/min/1.73m²
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

GFR <60 = chronic kidney disease. Gabriel's optimal band is 90-160. GFR 60-90 = reduced reserve, warrants monitoring. GFR declines with age, but shouldn't drop below 60 until very old age if kidneys are healthy. Protect kidney function early.

When This Test Is High

Usually not concerning (unless very high = hyperfiltration)

When This Test Is Low

Chronic kidney disease, declining kidney function

Related Conditions

CKD stages: <60=Stage 3, <30=Stage 4, <15=Stage 5

Recommended Follow-Up

If <90, monitor annually; if <60, evaluate for CKD causes; optimize BP, glucose, avoid NSAIDs
