Liver

Total Bilirubin

Unit: mg/dLID: M025

What This Test Measures

Breakdown product of red blood cells; processed by liver

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
0.1-1.2 mg/dL
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
0.5-0.9 mg/dL
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

Mildly elevated bilirubin (1.0-2.0) often = Gilbert's syndrome (benign genetic variant, actually protective). Very high = liver disease or hemolysis. Gabriel's optimal band is 0.5-0.9 for liver conjugation and bile flow.

When This Test Is High

Gilbert's syndrome (benign), hemolysis, liver disease, bile duct obstruction

When This Test Is Low

Usually not significant

Related Conditions

Jaundice, liver disease, hemolytic anemia

Recommended Follow-Up

If elevated, check direct/indirect bilirubin, liver enzymes, CBC; rule out hemolysis
