Gut Health

Calprotectin

Unit: μg/gID: G003

What This Test Measures

Inflammatory marker in stool; distinguishes IBD from IBS

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
<50 μg/g
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
<50 μg/g
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

Calprotectin >50 μg/g = intestinal inflammation (IBD possible). Under 50 makes IBD unlikely and fits IBS (functional, not inflammatory). This test helps tell IBD from IBS and decide who needs a colonoscopy. Calprotectin >200 = likely active IBD. It is often checked first when gut symptoms appear.

When This Test Is High

IBD (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), intestinal inflammation

When This Test Is Low

IBS (non-inflammatory), healthy gut

Related Conditions

IBD, intestinal infections, colon cancer

Recommended Follow-Up

If >50, rule out IBD with colonoscopy; if >200, highly suggestive of IBD
