Gut Health

Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)

Unit: μmol/gID: G005

What This Test Measures

Gut microbiome metabolites; gut lining fuel and anti-inflammatory

Conventional vs. Functional Optimal Range

Conventional "Normal"
Butyrate, acetate, propionate present μmol/g
Your doctor says you're "fine" anywhere in this range
Functional Optimal
High butyrate, balanced SCFAs μmol/g
This is where you actually feel great

The gap between these ranges is why you feel terrible with "normal" labs. Conventional medicine waits for disease. Functional medicine optimizes for health.

Gabriel's Take

SCFAs (especially butyrate) are produced by gut bacteria fermenting fiber. They fuel colon cells, reduce inflammation, and regulate metabolism. Low butyrate = dysbiosis, increased colon cancer risk, inflammation. Fiber, prebiotics (potato starch, inulin) and a diverse diet raise SCFAs.

When This Test Is High

Healthy microbiome, fiber-rich diet

When This Test Is Low

Dysbiosis, low fiber intake

Related Conditions

Low SCFAs: dysbiosis, IBD, metabolic disease, colon cancer risk

Recommended Follow-Up

Increase fiber, resistant starch, prebiotics; diversify microbiome
