Electrodermal screening is a family of devices that measure the skin's electrical resistance at acupuncture meridian points on your hands and feet. Practitioners map each point to an organ system and read a score from 0 to 100. The skin measurement is real, but it has not been shown in blinded studies to detect inflammation, organ disease, or toxin burden.
The original method, Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV), was developed by Dr. Reinhold Voll in Germany in the 1950s. Several device platforms carry it forward today with different approaches: classic point-by-point probing (Qest4/Asyra), hand-cradle readings (ZYTO), and frequency-based scanning (AO Scan). In the most careful blinded studies, published in the BMJ (2001) and Clinical and Experimental Allergy (2002), the devices could not tell allergens from blanks, and we found no controlled study validating them for organs, toxins or nutrients.
Practitioners also watch for an 'indicator drop', a reading that falls during measurement, and read it as a sign of toxins or chronic stress; that reading has not been validated. FDA rules cover skin resistance devices as galvanic skin response devices, which gauge autonomic responses as psychological indicators, and biofeedback devices, both Class II.
