What the label says
The Wegovy prescribing information (revised June 2026) doesn't name alcohol as an interaction or tell you to avoid it. That doesn't mean drinking is risk-free. Several of semaglutide's side effects and warnings overlap with what alcohol does to the body.
Cleveland Clinic's Ozempic page lists alcohol among things that can affect blood sugar and asks you to tell your care team if you drink. Your clinician can tell you what's reasonable for your health.
Why drinking on semaglutide can be a problem
- Worse stomach side effects. A 2025 joint advisory from four nutrition and obesity medicine groups says alcohol can worsen nausea and reflux on GLP-1 medicines and recommends keeping intake minimal.
- Dehydration. Alcohol dehydrates you. Vomiting and diarrhea from semaglutide can too, and the label warns that fluid loss can lead to kidney injury.
- Low blood sugar. The NIH alcohol institute warns that alcohol with diabetes medicines such as glipizide or glyburide can cause abnormally low blood sugar. The semaglutide label also warns about low blood sugar when it's combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
- Pancreatitis. Heavy drinking over years is a known cause of pancreatitis, accounting for roughly 17% to 25% of U.S. cases. Pancreatitis is also a warning on the semaglutide label.
- Extra calories. Drinks add calories without protein or nutrients when you're already eating less.
Get medical care right away for severe pain in the upper or middle stomach that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, treat shakiness, sweating, confusion or a fast heartbeat as possible low blood sugar.
Does semaglutide reduce alcohol cravings?
Early research suggests it might. In a small randomized trial published in JAMA Psychiatry in 2025, 48 adults with alcohol use disorder took semaglutide or placebo for 9 weeks. Those on semaglutide drank less in a lab drinking session, had fewer drinks on the days they drank, and reported less craving. It didn't reduce the number of days they drank.
The authors called for larger trials. Semaglutide isn't FDA-approved for alcohol use disorder. If you're worried about your drinking, talk with a clinician about proven options.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Planning a pregnancy: the Wegovy label says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide has a long half-life.
- If you become pregnant: call your clinician right away. For weight or heart-risk use, the label says to stop when pregnancy is recognized, because it may harm a developing baby.
- Breastfeeding, tablets: the label doesn't recommend breastfeeding while taking Wegovy tablets, because an ingredient in the tablet shows up in breast milk.
- Breastfeeding, injection: there are no data on whether injected semaglutide gets into breast milk. You and your clinician weigh the benefits of breastfeeding against your need for the drug.
Never stop or restart semaglutide without talking to your clinician. Your clinician decides the dose and the timing.
If you choose to drink
- Keep it to small amounts and eat something first.
- Drink water alongside, especially in the first weeks or after a dose increase.
- Skip alcohol when you have nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Common questions
Can you drink alcohol while taking semaglutide?
The label doesn't forbid it, but alcohol can worsen nausea, dehydration and low blood sugar risk. Experts advise keeping it minimal and checking with your clinician.
Does Ozempic interact with alcohol?
Alcohol isn't listed as a formal interaction, but it can affect blood sugar. That matters most if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.
Can drinking on semaglutide cause pancreatitis?
Heavy drinking is a known cause of pancreatitis, and pancreatitis is a warning on the semaglutide label. Severe stomach pain that won't go away needs medical care right away.
How long before getting pregnant should I stop semaglutide?
The Wegovy label says at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Plan the timing with your clinician.
Can I take semaglutide while breastfeeding?
The label doesn't recommend breastfeeding on Wegovy tablets. For the injection there are no data, so you and your clinician weigh the benefits and risks.
