Exosome Therapy.

What it is

Exosomes are tiny packets, far smaller than a cell, that cells release to signal one another. They carry proteins, fats and genetic messages such as microRNA. Exosome therapy uses exosomes collected from donor mesenchymal stem cells, with the aim of encouraging repair and calming inflammation.

Because exosomes contain no living cells, they can't grow or divide in the body, which is one reason many clinics see them as a gentler option than stem cells. They are given by IV or by injection into joints, the scalp or the skin. Research is early but growing quickly.

What happens at a visit

1. A consultation and baseline labs, such as inflammatory markers.
2. Exosomes from screened donor stem cells; ask how the clinic's product is tested.
3. An IV infusion of 30 to 60 minutes, or injections into a joint, the scalp or the face.
4. Some people feel mild fatigue for a day or two.
5. Any change usually takes 2 to 8 weeks to show.
6. Clinics often suggest a series of 3 to 6 treatments.

Evidence and safety

Exosome research is early but growing, with lab and animal studies and clinical trials underway; strong human evidence for specific uses is still limited. Choose a clinic that can show how its exosomes are sourced and tested, and talk with your doctor first if you are pregnant or have a history of cancer.
