What it is

Kampo is Japan's form of traditional herbal medicine, adapted from Chinese medicine and refined over more than 1,500 years. In Japan it is part of mainstream care: physicians prescribe it, and more than 140 formulas are officially approved and made to pharmaceutical standards.

Kampo uses classic multi-herb formulas matched to your pattern, or sho, which is found through questions and a pulse, tongue and abdominal exam. It's used for digestive problems, menopause symptoms, chronic pain, respiratory issues, anxiety and more, and many formulas have been tested in clinical trials.

What happens at a visit

  1. Questions about your health, plus pulse, tongue and abdominal exams.
  2. Identifying your Kampo pattern (sho).
  3. A classical formula matched to your pattern.
  4. Herbs as standardized granules or a traditional brewed decoction.
  5. Check-ins to track your response and adjust the formula.
  6. Coordination with your other medical care when needed.

Who it is for

  • People who want traditional herbal medicine with quality standards
  • People with digestive issues, menopause symptoms or chronic pain
  • People with chronic conditions who want an herbal option alongside their care
  • Anyone interested in Japanese medicine
  • People who want herbal care that fits with conventional treatment

Evidence and safety

Kampo has a sizable research base, including randomized trials for several formulas, though the strength of evidence varies by formula and condition. Products made to pharmaceutical standards help with quality and consistency. Side effects are uncommon but can occur, and herbs can interact with medicines, so tell your clinician what you take. Check with a clinician first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have liver or kidney disease.
