What it is
Red light therapy uses red and near-infrared light, usually about 630 to 850 nanometers, to support how cells work. The light is absorbed by mitochondria, the energy centers of cells, which is thought to help cells make energy and calm inflammation. It is a form of photobiomodulation, usually delivered by panels in a clinic or at home.
People use it for skin health, joint pain, wound healing, muscle recovery and thinning hair. Research is encouraging for skin, wound healing and some joint pain, and results tend to build with regular use.
What happens at a visit
- Sit or stand in front of a red and near-infrared light panel.
- Sessions of about 10 to 20 minutes.
- A gentle warmth, with no pain.
- Goggles or closed eyes to protect against the bright light.
- Read, relax or meditate during the session.
- Regular sessions, often 3 to 7 times a week, for the best results.
Who it is for
- People with joint pain or arthritis
- Athletes supporting recovery
- People who want to improve skin tone and texture
- People with thinning hair
- People healing from wounds or injuries
- People who want a non-invasive, drug-free option
Evidence and safety
Research on red and near-infrared light, or photobiomodulation, is encouraging for skin, wound healing, hair growth and some joint pain, though results vary with the device, dose and how often you use it. It is very safe when used as directed. Protect your eyes from bright panels, and check with a clinician first if you take light-sensitizing medicines, have a light-sensitive condition or a history of skin cancer, or are pregnant.
