What each one tracks

WHOOP gives three main scores. Recovery each morning is a percentage built from HRV, resting heart rate, sleep performance and breathing rate. Strain, on a 0 to 21 scale, is the heart and muscle load of your day. Sleep compares the sleep you got with the sleep you need. Peak adds Healthspan (WHOOP Age), a Health Monitor and a real-time Stress Monitor. Life adds an ECG Heart Screener, AFib detection and blood pressure insights. See what WHOOP does.

Apple Watch Series 12 tracks workouts, heart rate, HRV (including Recovery HRV), blood oxygen and wrist temperature, and gives a nightly Sleep Score. It has an ECG app, irregular rhythm notifications, sleep apnea notifications and hypertension notifications on top of the usual smartwatch features such as notifications and apps.

Subscription and total cost

  • WHOOP One, $199 a year: WHOOP 5.0 with core sleep, strain and recovery.
  • WHOOP Peak, $239 a year: adds Healthspan, Health Monitor and Stress Monitor.
  • WHOOP Life, $359 a year: the MG device with ECG, AFib detection and blood pressure insights.
  • Apple Watch Series 12, $399 once: Apple doesn't list a subscription for its health features. Cellular models need a wireless plan.

Over two years, WHOOP One costs $398 and Apple Watch Series 12 costs $399 plus any services you add. See WHOOP cost for monthly and family options.

Battery and wear

WHOOP lists 14+ days per charge on every model, and its US memberships include a wireless PowerPack charger. Apple lists up to 24 hours for Series 12, so most people charge it daily, often in the morning, to keep sleep tracking. The Ultra 4 lasts up to 50 hours.

Which to choose

  • Choose WHOOP if training load, recovery and sleep coaching are the point, you want long battery life, or you use Android.
  • Choose Apple Watch if you want one device for workouts, notifications and heart alerts, with no recurring fee, and you have an iPhone.

WHOOP's blood pressure insights are not a medical device, and neither device diagnoses heart disease. Call 911 for chest pain, fainting or severe shortness of breath, and see a clinician about any irregular rhythm alert.
