What Bronze means
| Metal level | Plan pays (about) | You pay (about) |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 60% | 40% |
| Silver | 70% | 30% |
| Silver with extra savings | 73% to 96% | Less, depending on the savings you qualify for |
Preventive services are generally covered at no cost from in-network providers, even before you meet the deductible.
When Bronze can make sense
- You expect little medical care and have savings for a bad year.
- Your doctors and prescriptions are in the plan.
- You want an HSA. All Bronze Marketplace plans work with one.
- You don't qualify for the extra savings that only come with Silver.
When to look hard at Silver
Cost-sharing reductions lower deductibles, copays and coinsurance, but you only get them in a Silver plan. Regular prescriptions, therapy, specialist visits or a planned procedure can also make a higher-premium plan cheaper over the year.
Where Gabriel fits
With a Bronze plan, much of your everyday care comes out of pocket until you reach the deductible. That's where member pricing helps: Gabriel Core is $49 per adult a month (kids under 18 included) and gives member prices close to cost on lab tests, supplements, prescriptions and bioregulators. It also includes unlimited virtual urgent care, plus unlimited virtual primary care. Gabriel Plus, $89, adds in-person urgent care visits and more. Gabriel membership adds a monthly wellness budget your household shares. Gabriel can also help you compare plans and switch at no cost.
Gabriel is a membership, not health insurance, and Gabriel is not an insurer. It does not replace an ACA plan's protection against large medical bills. Gabriel doesn't lower your plan's deductible.
Common questions
Are Bronze plans bad insurance?
No. The metal level describes cost sharing, not quality. The question is whether the premium, deductible, network and drug list fit your year.
Do Bronze plans cover preventive care?
Yes. Marketplace plans generally cover preventive services at no cost from in-network providers, even before the deductible.
Do Bronze plans work with an HSA?
HealthCare.gov says all Bronze Marketplace plans work with Health Savings Accounts.
Bronze or Silver: which is better?
If you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, Silver often wins because those savings only apply to Silver. If you're healthy and want the lowest premium and an HSA, Bronze can fit.
Is Bronze better than a Catastrophic plan?
Anyone can buy Bronze. If you qualify for a premium tax credit or extra savings, HealthCare.gov says a Bronze or Silver plan may be a better value than Catastrophic. See catastrophic health insurance.
