What to do during Open Enrollment

  1. Update your income estimate for 2027. Savings are based on what you expect to earn in the coverage year.
  2. Update your household. Marriage, a new baby, or a child aging out all change your savings and plan options.
  3. Compare, don't just renew. Premiums, networks and drug lists change every year. Check that your doctors and prescriptions are still covered.
  4. Price a quiet year and a heavy year. Add 12 months of premiums to the deductible and the out-of-pocket maximum. For 2027 the Marketplace limit on in-network out-of-pocket costs is $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family.
  5. Pick by December 15 if you want coverage on January 1, then pay the first premium.

Gabriel can quote Marketplace plans for your ZIP code and household, show the price after any tax credit, and open your own application with a licensed agent in most states. You choose the plan and finish the application.

Changes to know for 2027

  • Tax credit income limit: the IRS says the temporary removal of the 400% of poverty limit covered tax years 2021 through 2025. For 2026, the 100% to 400% range applies again. HealthCare.gov will post 2027 income levels on November 1, 2026. See premium tax credit.
  • Immigration status: starting January 1, 2027, only certain immigration statuses qualify for Marketplace savings, per HealthCare.gov.
  • Oregon: starting November 1, Oregon residents use ExploreHealthOR.gov to enroll in 2027 coverage instead of HealthCare.gov.
  • Higher out-of-pocket limit: $12,000 individual and $24,000 family in 2027, up from $10,600 and $21,200 in 2026.

If you miss Open Enrollment

After January 15 you can only enroll in a Marketplace plan with a Special Enrollment Period, usually triggered by a life event like losing coverage, moving, marriage or a new child. You can apply for Medicaid or CHIP any time of year.

How Medicare open enrollment is different

Medicare's Open Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 each year. You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage or drug plan, and changes start January 1. A separate Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 to March 31, is only for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan. People with Medicare can't buy Marketplace health plans.

Gabriel is not an insurer. Health insurance quotes and enrollment are handled by Gabriel Labs, Gabriel's separately licensed insurance agency. Gabriel membership is not health insurance and doesn't replace a health plan.
