What it is
Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of India, with roots thousands of years old, and its name means "the science of life." It sees health as a balance of body, mind and spirit, guided by three doshas: vata (movement), pitta (transformation) and kapha (structure). Each person has their own constitution, or prakriti.
A practitioner assesses you through questions, your pulse and your tongue, then builds a personal plan that can include diet, daily routines, herbs, yoga, meditation, abhyanga oil massage and sometimes panchakarma, a traditional cleansing program. The focus is prevention and the whole person.
What happens at a visit
- A long first visit, often 60 to 90 minutes.
- Pulse and tongue assessment and detailed questions.
- An assessment of your constitution (prakriti) and current imbalances (vikriti).
- Personal advice on diet, sleep and daily routine.
- Herbal formulas chosen for your constitution and concerns.
- Possible yoga, meditation or a panchakarma program.
- Follow-up visits to refine the plan.
Who it is for

Evidence and safety
Ayurveda has a long traditional history, and some of its parts have good modern research, such as yoga, with growing evidence for herbs like turmeric and ashwagandha; the system as a whole is less studied. Product quality matters, since some Ayurvedic products have been found to contain heavy metals such as lead, so choose tested brands. Herbs can interact with medicines, so share what you take, and take extra care during pregnancy, breastfeeding or with kidney or liver disease.
