What it is
Homeopathy was developed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s. It rests on the principle of "like treats like": a substance that causes symptoms in large doses is used, highly diluted, for similar symptoms. Remedies from plants, minerals and other natural sources are diluted and shaken (succussed) in repeated steps.
Care is highly individual. A homeopath matches the remedy to your whole picture of physical, emotional and mental symptoms, not just a diagnosis, aiming to support the body's own healing. It is widely used in Europe and India, often for colds, minor injuries and allergies.
What happens at a visit
- A long first visit covering physical, emotional and mental symptoms.
- Questions about sleep, food preferences, fears, temperature and more.
- A remedy chosen to match your overall pattern.
- Small sugar pellets or liquid drops to take as directed.
- Follow-up visits to review how you respond and adjust the remedy.
Who it is for
- People looking for gentle remedies alongside medical care
- People who are sensitive to many medications
- People with long-term concerns who want a whole-person approach
- Parents looking for gentle options for minor childhood complaints
- People interested in energy medicine and holistic traditions
Evidence and safety
Homeopathy is scientifically debated. Most remedies are diluted so far that none of the original substance remains, and NCCIH says there's little evidence that it works for any specific health condition, though many people value the care. Highly diluted remedies rarely cause side effects, but not every product is highly diluted: NCCIH notes some products labeled homeopathic contain substantial amounts of active ingredients that can cause side effects and drug interactions. The FDA has approved no homeopathic products and has not reviewed them for safety or effectiveness; some are made from toxic substances such as belladonna, nux vomica, mercury or lead, the FDA found excessive belladonna in some homeopathic teething tablets, and it has sent more than 20 warning letters since 2020. The main risk is delaying effective care: use it alongside, not instead of, medical care for serious or worsening illness, and check with a clinician first for children, pregnancy or ongoing conditions.
