What it is

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained in primary care with a focus on natural therapies. They complete four-year doctoral programs that cover the core medical sciences plus clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine and counseling. Where licensed, NDs can examine you, order labs and imaging, and in some states prescribe.

Care follows a few principles: do no harm, support the body's ability to heal, treat the cause and the whole person, teach, and prevent. First visits are long, and plans often combine nutrition, herbs, supplements and lifestyle changes, in coordination with your other doctors.

What happens at a visit

  1. A long first visit, often 60 to 120 minutes.
  2. A full health history and a physical exam if needed.
  3. A look at your diet, sleep, stress and environment.
  4. Lab tests to find what's behind your symptoms.
  5. A personal plan built on natural therapies.
  6. Clear explanations of your condition and the reason for each step.
  7. Regular follow-ups, and ongoing care if you want it.

Who it is for

  • People who want natural medicine from a trained doctor
  • People who want more time with their practitioner
  • People focused on prevention and long-term health
  • People with chronic conditions who want a root-cause approach
  • Anyone who wants natural and conventional care to work together
  • People who prefer to start with diet, lifestyle and botanicals before medicines

Evidence and safety

NDs complete accredited four-year doctoral programs and are licensed in many US states and Canadian provinces, though rules and scope vary, so check that yours is licensed. The evidence depends on the therapy: nutrition and lifestyle changes are well supported, while some remedies rest more on traditional use. Share every supplement and herb you take, since some interact with medicines, and keep your other doctors involved for serious conditions.
