What it is
Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is hands-on care from doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), who are fully licensed physicians. It rests on the idea that the body's structure and function are linked and that the body has its own capacity to heal. Techniques range from gentle counterstrain, muscle energy and myofascial release to quick high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) manipulation.
Research supports OMT best for low back pain, and DOs use it widely for neck pain and other muscle and joint problems. Some also use gentle techniques, such as cranial osteopathy, alongside standard care for other conditions.

Evidence and safety
