What it is

Ozone therapy uses a precise mix of medical-grade oxygen and ozone (O3). In small, controlled doses, ozone creates a mild oxidative stress that is thought to prompt the body's own antioxidant and immune responses. It can be mixed with a small amount of your blood and returned by IV (major autohemotherapy), given by insufflation, injected into joints or tissues, or applied to the skin.

Ozone has a long history in European practice. People use it for joint pain, circulation, chronic infections and inflammation. The strongest research is for injections into painful joints; for other uses, the evidence is earlier.

Evidence and safety

Evidence is strongest for ozone injections into painful joints, where trials show it can ease pain. With medical-grade equipment and a trained clinician, serious side effects are uncommon. Ozone must never be inhaled. People who are pregnant or have G6PD deficiency, an overactive thyroid or serious heart disease should check with a clinician first.
