What's new in Oura Ring 5

  • Smaller and lighter. Oura calls it the world's smallest smart ring, about 40% smaller than Ring 4.
  • Redesigned sensors. Oura says it rebuilt the sensing system with 12 signal pathways and low-profile sensor domes for accuracy. Oura has not published a head-to-head accuracy study against Ring 4 that we could find.
  • A bit more battery: 6 to 9 days, and an optional charging case, sold separately, that Oura says gives up to a month of total battery.
  • Waterproof rating: IP68 to 100 meters.
  • More finishes: Gold, Deep Rose, Brushed Silver, Stealth, Black and Silver.

Both rings have the same sensor types: green, red and infrared LEDs for heart rate, HRV, breathing rate and blood oxygen, a temperature sensor and an accelerometer.

Do both rings get the same features?

Mostly, yes. Oura said the new software it announced with Ring 5, including Health Radar and GLP-1 insights, is available to members with Oura Ring Gen3 and newer. So a Ring 4 owner gets new app features through the same membership.

Health Radar and similar features are wellness tools. They can flag a change worth asking about, but they don't diagnose anything.

Which one to buy

  • Choose Ring 5 if comfort and size matter most, you want the newest hardware, and you wear a size from 6 to 13.
  • Choose Ring 4 if you want to save $50 or more, or you need a size 4, 5, 14 or 15.
  • Already have Ring 4? The app features carry over, so upgrading is mainly about size and battery.
  • Size it fresh. Oura's Ring 5 size range differs from Ring 4, so use Oura's free sizing kit rather than assuming your old size.

Whichever you pick, Gabriel can read your sleep, HRV and heart rate data next to your lab results. For the full cost, see Oura Ring price.
