What is an Oura Ring?

An Oura Ring is a titanium smart ring that tracks your sleep, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), temperature trends, blood oxygen and activity, and turns them into daily scores in the Oura app. The current models are Oura Ring 5, launched in May 2026, and Oura Ring 4, which Oura still sells.

It is a wellness tracker, not a medical device. It is good at telling sleep from wake and at showing your own trends over time. It is less exact for sleep stages, and it can't diagnose a sleep or heart condition.

What the Oura Ring tracks

Oura says the ring and app track more than 50 health metrics. They come from a few sensors on the inside of the ring, listed on Oura's Ring 5 and Ring 4 product pages:

  • Green and infrared LEDs for heart rate, HRV and breathing rate.
  • Red and infrared LEDs for blood oxygen.
  • A temperature sensor for skin temperature trends, which feed features such as Symptom Radar and women's health insights.
  • An accelerometer for movement, steps and activity.

The app rolls this into three daily scores: Sleep, Readiness and Activity. With a membership you also see detailed sleep stages, daytime stress, heart health, women's health and metabolic features, and Oura's AI assistant, Oura Advisor.

How it works day to day

  • Wear it all the time, including at night. Oura measures HRV only during sleep, averaging five-minute samples across the night, so sleep is when it learns the most.
  • Charge it about once a week. Oura lists 6 to 9 days of battery for Ring 5 and 5 to 8 days for Ring 4, depending on size and settings.
  • Shower and swim with it. Ring 5 is rated waterproof to 100 meters (IP68); Ring 4 is water resistant to 100 meters.
  • Sync with your phone. The Oura app runs on iPhone and Android.

You need a membership for most features: $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, with the first month free for new members (as of October 2026). Without it, Oura says you see only your three daily scores. See Oura Ring price for the full cost.

How accurate is the Oura Ring?

The best-known study is a University of Tokyo validation published in Sleep Medicine. It compared Oura's sleep algorithm with a lab sleep study (polysomnography) in 96 healthy adults aged 20 to 70. As summarized by Oura:

  • Sleep versus wake: the ring caught about 94% of sleep correctly.
  • Sleep stages: accuracy ranged from 75.5% for light sleep to 90.6% for REM sleep.
  • The study was partly funded by Oura, and everyone in it was healthy. Results may differ for people with insomnia, sleep apnea or other conditions.

Cleveland Clinic sleep experts say consumer trackers are best at telling wake from sleep, tend to overestimate how much of your time in bed you spend asleep, and can't measure sleep stages as precisely as a lab study with brain-wave sensors. Read the numbers as trends, not exact measurements.

A ring can't rule out a sleep disorder. See a clinician if you snore loudly, stop breathing or gasp during sleep, feel very sleepy during the day, or have chest pain, fainting or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Call 911 for chest pain or trouble breathing.

Who an Oura Ring suits

  • People who want sleep and recovery data without a screen on the wrist. A ring is easy to sleep in.
  • People who track cycles or temperature trends, since the ring reads skin temperature every night.
  • Not ideal if you want workout GPS, notifications or apps on your wrist. A smartwatch does those; see Oura Ring vs Apple Watch.

If you track sleep, HRV or heart rate, Gabriel can read that data next to your lab results. Ask Gabriel anything free by app, web, text or voice.

Common questions

What does an Oura Ring do?

It tracks sleep, heart rate, HRV, skin temperature trends, blood oxygen and activity, and gives you daily Sleep, Readiness and Activity scores in the Oura app.

Do you need a subscription for the Oura Ring?

For most features, yes. As of October 2026, Oura membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, with the first month free. Without it you see only your three daily scores.

Is the Oura Ring accurate?

It is good at telling sleep from wake. In an Oura-funded study of healthy adults, sleep stage accuracy ranged from about 76% to 91% compared with a lab sleep study. Treat it as a trend tracker, not a diagnostic test.

Can the Oura Ring detect sleep apnea?

It can't diagnose sleep apnea. If you snore, gasp at night or feel very sleepy during the day, ask a clinician about a sleep study.

How long does the Oura Ring battery last?

Oura lists 6 to 9 days for Ring 5 and 5 to 8 days for Ring 4, depending on ring size, settings and use.
