Protocol Overview

Comprehensive protocol to rebuild immune system after chemotherapy, radiation, or other immunosuppressive treatments. Focuses on bone marrow support, T-cell regeneration, and overall immune recovery.

Conditions Treated

Safety Profile

Contraindications & Risks
Don't stimulate immune system during active chemo (can interfere - wait until completion), avoid if current cancer (immune stimulation could theoretically help cancer - controversial, work with oncologist)
Important Notes

Chemotherapy and radiation damage bone marrow (where immune cells produced), gut (where immunity developed), and immune organs (thymus, lymph nodes). Recovery takes months. White blood cells: Neutrophils recover first (1-3 weeks), lymphocytes (T-cells, B-cells) take longer (6-24 months) and may never fully recover to pre-chemo levels. Glutamine is most studied - reduces infection risk, supports gut healing (chemo damages gut lining). Vitamin D crucial - most cancer patients deficient, needed for immune cell maturation. Zinc essential for T-cell function. Medicinal mushrooms: Turkey tail (PSK/PSP) studied in Asia for decades with cancer patients - immune-enhancing polysaccharides, improves survival in some cancers as adjunct. Reishi, maitake, cordyceps also beneficial. Beta-glucans (from mushrooms or yeast) stimulate immune system. Probiotics rebuild gut microbiome (destroyed by chemo/antibiotics). Colostrum provides immunoglobulins and growth factors. Thymus glandular controversial but used by some (thymus shrinks with age and chemo - produces T-cells). Astragalus traditional in Chinese medicine for "tonifying" immunity. Protein is foundation - need adequate to rebuild white cells and antibodies. Timing matters: During chemo, support (hydration, nutrition, side effect management) but don't aggressively stimulate immunity. After completion, rebuild aggressively. Oncologists often unfamiliar with these protocols - work with integrative oncology nutritionist or naturopath. Goal: Reduce infection risk, rebuild immune surveillance (cancer prevention). Many patients left with compromised immunity for years - address it.
