What it is

Reflexology applies firm thumb and finger pressure to points on the feet, hands or ears. Reflexology maps link each area to a part of the body: the toes to the head, the ball of the foot to the chest, the arch to digestion and the heel to the pelvis and lower back. One modern theory is that the pressure works through the nervous system to trigger relaxation.

People use it for stress, pain, sleep and general well-being. Many find it deeply relaxing and gentler than full-body massage, which makes it an easy way into bodywork.

What happens at a visit

1. Recline comfortably with your feet raised.
2. The practitioner checks your feet for tender or tense areas.
3. Firm, rhythmic pressure on reflex points of the feet, hands or ears.
4. Some points may feel tender.
5. Point work alternates with soothing massage strokes.
6. Deep relaxation; many people fall asleep.

Evidence and safety

Studies, including systematic reviews, suggest reflexology can ease anxiety and stress and improve comfort and quality of life, with some benefit for pain. Research hasn't confirmed the links between foot points and specific organs, so tender spots aren't a diagnosis. It is very safe, with mild tenderness at most.
